Global macro intelligence for August 3–7, 2026
Markets enter the first week of August with gold, energy, U.S. monetary policy, geopolitics and AI infrastructure at the center of attention.
UBS sees a path for gold to regain momentum in H2 2026 if the Federal Reserve avoids additional rate increases, investment demand improves and central-bank purchases remain strong. Gold was around $4,077/oz on July 30, while weaker investment and jewelry demand has recently limited upside momentum. UBS sees potential for $4,400 by September and $4,600 by December, while warning that a near-term pullback toward $3,850 remains possible.
Gani Capital View
Gold remains highly sensitive to real yields, USD direction, Fed expectations and central-bank demand. The $4,000 area is therefore an important psychological zone, while the Fed and upcoming U.S. labor data could determine the next major directional move.
President Trump said the U.S. would hold off on a planned fresh attack against Iran while pursuing a potential agreement involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and nuclear negotiations. However, the situation remains fragile, with Iran warning of retaliation if attacks resume.
Market Implication
Any credible progress toward reopening Hormuz could reduce the geopolitical risk premium in crude oil. Conversely, renewed military escalation or disruption to shipping could rapidly push energy prices higher and reinforce global inflation concerns.
AI infrastructure remains a major market theme. UBS has argued that the market may be underestimating the structural profitability potential of memory manufacturers as AI workloads increase demand for advanced memory. At the same time, analysts continue to debate whether enormous AI infrastructure spending can generate sufficient productivity and earnings to justify current valuations.
Gani Capital View
The AI trade is increasingly moving beyond individual technology stocks toward the broader semiconductor, memory, data-center and infrastructure supply chain. Investors should distinguish between sustainable AI demand and speculative valuation expansion.
The U.S. labor market will dominate the economic calendar this week. Key releases include:
The jobs report could significantly influence expectations around the Fed's next moves. A weaker labor market could reinforce expectations for easier monetary policy, potentially supporting gold, while stronger employment data could strengthen the case for restrictive policy and support the dollar.
Another important theme is whether the enormous capital expenditure associated with AI is sustainable. The central question for markets is increasingly:
"Are AI investments generating enough economic productivity and earnings to justify the scale of capital being deployed?"
A deterioration in AI earnings expectations could create volatility across technology and semiconductor equities, while a continued acceleration in AI adoption could support the sector and its supply chain.
| Asset / Theme | Key Driver | Bias to Monitor |
|---|---|---|
| 🟡 Gold | Fed, USD, real yields, central-bank demand | Two-way / event-driven |
| 🛢️ Crude Oil | Hormuz, Iran diplomacy, supply risk | Highly volatile |
| 💵 USD | Fed expectations + jobs data | Data dependent |
| 📈 U.S. Equities | Jobs + earnings + AI valuations | Cautious |
| 🤖 AI / Semiconductors | Memory demand + capex | Constructive but valuation-sensitive |
This is a data-driven week, not a headline-driven week.
The interaction between U.S. employment data, Federal Reserve expectations, gold, the U.S. dollar, oil supply risks and AI valuations could produce significant cross-asset volatility.
